Dr. Mollie McIntosh is a visiting research associate in the Department of Entomology at Michigan State University. She is currently working with Dr. Rich Merritt, and other colleagues, on understanding the ecology of Mycobacterium ulcerans infection, also known as Buruli ulcer disease.
Dr. McIntosh received a bachelor's degree in biology from the University of Dayton in 1999 and a master's degree in environmental science with a concentration in applied ecology from the School of Public and Environmental Affairs at Indiana University in 2001. She received her Ph.D. in entomology from Michigan State University in 2007.
From 1998 to 2000, Dr. McIntosh was an undergraduate research assistant in the University of Dayton's Biology Department. Subsequent to that, she was a graduate research assistant and teaching assistant in the School of Public and Environmental Affairs at Indiana University. From 2002 to 2007, Dr. McIntosh conducted her doctoral research project focusing on the use of macroinvertebrates as indicators of wetland quality in the Muskegon River Watershed. In addition to conducting research, Dr. McIntosh is also very active in science education, teaching undergraduate, graduate and study-abroad courses, and other outreach programs.
Dr. McIntosh's main research interests focus on the ecology, biology, and behavior of aquatic organisms and how these organisms respond to changes in the environment. Her general fields of interest include community/population ecology, entomology, plant/insect interactions, disturbance ecology, disease ecology and forensic entomology.
Dr. McIntosh's awards and honors include: the Dissertation Completion Fellowship from Michigan State University; the Dr. Robert R. Dreisbach Award for Outstanding Doctoral Student; the Hutson Research Grant; Dr. Eugenia McDaniel Teaching Award; Lauff Tuition Scholarship; Daniel E. Willard Fellowship and Wetland Research Award; Learn, Lead and Serve Scholarship; University of Dayton Scholar's Program; University of Dayton President's Scholarship; and Jesse Phillips Scholarship.
Her research has been published in Freshwater Biology, Emerging Infectious Diseases, River Research and Applications, Encyclopedia of Inland Waters, PLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases, Journal of Forensic Sciences, Journal of Insect Conservation, International Journal of Limnology and Micronesica, among other publications.
Dr. McIntosh is a member of the Entomological Society of America, the North American Benthological Society, the North American Forensic Entomology Association, and the American Academy of Forensic Science. She is also associate editor of American Midland Naturalist and she serves on the Plagiarism Inquiry Panel for general Legal Council, Office of Intellectual Integrity, Michigan State University.
